COMPETITION!

Hey bloggers! Sorry for the delay, but I've been busy building up my customer base for my new business, and its going pretty well :). Like I've mentioned in previous posts and on facebook too; if the state of the world economy looks bad create your own economy and build a business. I've taken that to heart and I fully believe that my situation is turning around even as you read this. Matter of fact, if you'd like to see what I have to offer check out my website yourself: www.thedkshop.com. Aside in my foundation building for my business, I've been making some good gains on the track. I had my first meet last weekend. I don't know what time I officially ran, but the race felt pretty good. I had a decent start and pressed through the first 3 hurdles and maintained on the back stretch pretty well. Im was able to press a little more down the back stretch, but I started to get too comfortable and relaxed. By 300m I was out in front feeling pretty good, but subconsciously allowed my body to slow down which resulted in an unfortunate ending. I was passed up the last 10 meters for a 2nd place finish. I was pretty upset with myself for relaxing soo much and allowing my competitors a second chance. Fortunately, there is another day to compete and always a chance to learn from your mistakes. This next race I'll make good on getting out hard and pressing the back stretch all the way through the finish line. My next race is going to be tomorrow at around 4pm. I'll have an update for you all coming up shortly after the meet. Until later yall. This is the life of a man chasing his dreams. DK

Investments: You Choose, but Choose the Right One

Hey bloggerz!

Im back with a little something to meditate, a note to think on, and hopefully motivate you. Selah.

The last post was a bit of overflow that I've been acquiring the past few months through the active, yet very rewarding feat of conquering books. Since I've been out of school and no longer have to read books, I've realized how momentous they can be to one's life. The greatest thing to invest in is yourself, your own mind. Books have the power to shape the way we think about things and can give us insight as to things that will either stunt or propel our growth. Since I've read a few books, I notice how simple some of the techniques are to put into play - for that matter how often I remember hearing them growing up. I believe that only when you start to analyze the information in a book for yourself in a way where you can apply it to your life that we realize significance of words, creating a desire for more of them. So thats exactly what I've been up to lately.

Going along with the latest post I want to educate everyone reading about making money effectively. I have been blessed with an ability and desire to teach people and explain things. This is something I believe many people need to know, so hopefully you have stopped by purposefully or accidentaly and will take away valuable understanding from this post.

Aside from investing in myself, I've decided to give investing a sure shot. After some careful analysis of risks and benefits I decided to invest in a business model. For those of you who may not be too business savy there are four main ways to create income. The first two are very active ways whereby you devote time for dollars and only time invested, each week say, will amount to dollars earned. So number 1 way people make money is to become an employee of someone or some company. The other active way to create income is to start your own traditional business where you have to invest your money (or the bank's) along with a substantial amount of time in order to generate income. Mind you, although the traditional business approach is a great way to earn a good income as your own boss more that 50% of businesses fail within 2 years and the other 50% will either fail within the next year or "break even" (earn as much money as they invested) within 3 more years. So statistically, all businesses, if they survive long enough, generally require 5 years to break even. That doesn't sound like something I can afford to do, so what are the last two ways to make money?

Glad that you asked and are still tuned in! The next way to make money is a passive creation of income: investments. Yes at first you may study the ways to invest and what markets or industries are heavily invested or soon to grow cash cows, but after you make your initial investment you can sit back and do a few clicks on your computer to watch your money grow. The problem with investments is that they are SO risky. The stock markets move in cycles and are constantly in a up down transition. Also, investments depend a lot on what news and events are going on around the globe. *As you can see in the Middle East and East-African countries, their protests are driving our gas prices up, WAY UP.

So you may think well how else can I make money without worrying about someone telling me what to do, without the fear of bankruptcy or loss of investment, and without the immeasurable risk in the stock market? The 4th and final way to make money is to create or invest in a business model. This passive form of income is an idea im sure you've heard of: creating residual income. Residual income is money that comes in regardless of if you continue to put more work in or not. A business model is one where you link your success to others' success and by so doing, create an exponential ability to create income. How many of you know that one person can only make so much money by themselves. That is why people employ others to do the simple foundational work while their net worth increases. This form of income may take a little while to establish enough income to where you can live solely off of it. However, when the foundation is created it can work wonders for your financial and personal freedom.

I have recently decided to invest in a business model myself through the great team of LTD. Through LTD I market products from huge companies like Best Buy, Barnes & Nobel, Amway Global, and Office Depot to name a few, to consumers in need of those products, which in turn allows me to make money. Now Im not advocating any schemes or scams. A legal residual income business should allow you the freedom of making more money than the person sponsoring you if you do more work; success based on your own terms (i.e. personal goals and ambitions); a limited risk for investing-similar to a franchising model; and also allow you to withdraw from the program within a trial period to determine if it is for you (with a full refund in the process). Now the LTD team Im hooked up with allows me all of this and is a legitimate way to make some extra money. If you think you'd be interested in learning more about exponential income and want to talk feel free to post a comment, e-mail me: dkinney_hu@comcast.net, or view my website: http://kinneyenterprises.ltdteam.com Username: 8549732 Password: guest

What Will Make You Rich and Allow You To Enjoy It?

Hey Bloggers, I have some exciting news! Have you ever wondered how to become rich; like what is it that will get YOU there? I feel that a lot of people are milling around life just hoping to have success, and unfortunately it will probably never happen like that. So many millionaires and wealthy people have done just about two things to ensure their success. That is 1) to invest their years into themselves by studying or reading lots of books or either making sure they position themselves around someone who knows what they need to know (a mentor); and 2)they take action!

You can't expect to gain anything without taking action. 100 times out of 100.99 times money doesn't just fall out of the sky and waah-la you're rich. You will have to take some kind of action towards success before it actually has an ability to become reality. Well, you might say, "Daniel, I don't know what I should do to create wealth for myself". I can let you in on a little secret that you may have even heard before. Follow your passions and dreams especially if your natural talents match up closely with those dreams. For example, if you have always loved helping people when they are injured, and you do very well in classes like anatomy and biology you may want to look at being somewhere in the medical field. John Maxwell said 90% of the time your passions will tell you your purpose, but your talents will tell you 100% of the time.

I know that from church and from reading about successful people who have followed their passions that God places on the inside of us a strong desire to do something. That desire is always hooked up to our purpose or the things we are called to do in the earth. When you chase what you love to do, its much easier...it no longer seems like a job, or work, or just a means to an end. Isn't it much easier to do something you like to do whether someone tells you to do it versus doing something you don't like to do? YES, because it doesn't seem like a chore. You actually enjoy doing that task. That's the same way with your way to create wealth through your purpose.

Now just because you have good stage presence and can sing very well doesn't mean you will be a breakout actress or celebrity singer. It may take years to actually cultivate and fine tune your gifts and talents before you become wealthy. You may even be broke for a period of time while chasing your dreams. The key here is not to think about being wealthy, but to think about how much you really enjoy doing what it is you're chasing. If you don't get hung up on the WHEN and start to enjoy the NOW, then in due time the money will come.

A major law of the earth is Seed, Time, and Harvest. Just think about a farmer, and how he plants seeds, allows it time to grow, then collects the harvest that springs up. Think of yourself as a farmer of life. Sow seeds into your dreams and passions, allow time for them to spring up, and then (after the first two steps) you'll reap that harvest you have been waiting for. Now don't be discouraged when it doesn't come when you expect or want it to come. Its a race of patience and endurance. You will get there though, believe that!

I just want to encourage all of you reading this, not to quit you jobs that you loathe so much to wake up for each day, but to start planting seeds into your dream. If you work in corporate America and desire to have your own fashion line, start by taking some sewing classes or upholstery classes at your local JoAnn Fabrics. The continuous deposit of those small seeds will sprout up into a massive tree of life, where one day you can get on the path you were designed to walk and be in your wealthy place. Praise the LORD!

The Pangs of Indoor

Hey bloggers, I hope you all Northerners are staying in a bundled up. I just got off the phone with my dad and he said they are expecting at least 12 inches of snow TONIGHT. It is supposed to be below zero with the windchill, and that makes for dangerous conditions. He said that this will be the worst winter storm in forty (40) years!! Now thats crazy.

Fortunately for me, I think I escaped the harsh northern winters just in time. Here in Florida its probably 65 right now 11:37pm and tomorrow it is forcasted to be in the 80s. If that isn't completely opposite weather I don't know what is. Thank God for the sunshine state, lol :)

Besides blizzards and delayed travel, tomorrow also marks the first day where a large group of the Star Athletics team will make the push up North...further than our North; Im talking Canada. It is the first weekend where we'll start to compete across borders so thats pretty exciting. In races its important to have good runs and really do your best because money is on the line and people gotta eat.

Unfortunately for me, I won't be accompanying the bulk of the team. I'll be here enjoying sunny FL weather. I was actually looking forward to running in that meet, but upon further review coach said that he would hold me out of another indoor season and continue to focus on and getting around the track outdoors. I can't be mad because I know I need some more training now and with meets on the weekends I would have to taper my workouts during the week leaving me with only small gains.

It kind of sucks though watching everyone on your team travel around the world and your still here. I mean I would have liked to get in at least an open 400 or maybe a 600 to work on some sprint endurance (even though I hate that race). Its all good though I will just have to keep my head in it and on the goals at hand. I will be able to use this training to propel me toward some meets in late March where I will be able to reap some of the benefits of not running indoor.

This week practice has been going really well (lol, I know its only Tues, but are harder days are Mon/Tues) and I made some decisions to get the workouts done. Its much easier to do physical or strenuous work when your mind is dreading what you do. Your thoughts control your emotions and your emotions determine how you perceive something, that then becomes your reality. Pretty serious huh? Guard your thoughts and make sure you don't speak negative about your situation. Being positive and speaking positive helps more than you may ever know. Well Im beat and ready to take it down...Catch yall later bloggerz!

January's End Season's beginning

Hiya bloggers,

This is ya boy back on the blog network! Ima try and stay consistent for yall so you can keep up on the good stuff :).

Talk about time flying...The indoor season for our team is kicking off this weekend. We're about 3 days from the Star Athletics team getting a crack at some of our rivals and competitors. The meet will be on Saturday and Sunday @ the University of Florida. I have been anticipating getting closer to the start date for competition, but as it gets closer Im trying to stay focused and buckle down for this last stretch so everything will be what it needs to be. Unfortunately, Im talking last several weeks stretch and not days, lol. I'll be training through the indoor season and preparing to go smack at it come outdoor season. My training has been going well, but I've had some mental blocks holding me back the past few weeks and hadn't practiced like I know Im capable of. Thats why from here out I'm going to try my best to leave the drama from my life at my house or in my car while I go to work on the track. I have to make sure Im ready to go and with no doubt in mind am ready to accomplish those goals I've placed for this year. My primary goal is to qualify and compete in the USA National Outdoor Championships. My secondary goal either during or after I've achieved the first is to run 49.5 seconds in my event 400hurdles. Lastly, I've put a goal out there to compete overseas for the first year. I feel that it would be a great catalyst going into the following season...an Olympic year. Overseas competitions would put me in the atmosphere of international runners and allow me to get a better idea of the true nature of the track and field world.

In other news, excitingly, we had two gentlemen from France visit our team for a day and administer a new system to train your mental zone and allow yourself focus more and be free from stresses and mental barriers. It was kind of like a stress relief technique where you completely relax your mind and body and not focus on one thing or another, but just do whatever they said (i.e. jog, walk, run)I, along with four other teammates, had the privelege to test this new guaranteed system out. I felt that it was pretty accurate as to the issues that were holding each athlete back from doing better, or an area that they could improve on that would ultimately have a very positive affect on their training and competion. There was a bit of a bump in the road though, Ok maybe it was more like a pile of steel cinderblocks (if there is such a thing). Nonetheless, the cost for 12 sessions with these guys was 20k thats ($20,000). Im not sure any one of us has 20k to just throw around, and if they do they can give it to me and I'll help them focus for 20 thousand, lol. Anyway, I believe that a person can use techniques from ways to relieve stress and also Biblical principles that help to keep your body whole, well, and balanced.

On a lighter note, has anyone seen Dinner for Schmucks? I just saw it a few days ago and it is a pretty shallow movie, and at times I was a bit upset at some characters for their outrageous behavior, but there are some pretty hilarious parts in there too. not many though, so I wouldn't recommend buying the thing...just redbox it and if you don't like it, its only a dollar wasted. Check it out. Anyway, thats what I've been up to.

Well, this is about all for me this week. I'll keep you all updated on the rest of my week and weekend...should be a good one. This is the life of...a man getting it together!

Conditioning

Here it is!! The World Championship season is just down the street and the olympic year is soon approaching as well. As you may or may not know this coming 2011 year will be a world championship year, where many outstanding athletes will once again come together represent their countries and compete for medals. This championship event comes around every other year and you can think of it as a lesser publicized Olympic Games competition. Many people will be stepping up their training schedules and coming out of their hiatus' to perform their potentials this season, so everyone must be prepared when they step into that lane aiming to earn a spot on their country's championship team.

Speaking of training harder, I began my second week of fall conditioning yesterday, and am pretty encouraged. Last week was not too bad considering I took a complete month to do NO RUNNING WHATSOEVER!! lol. If you have had a chance to read some of my last posts, you'll know that I did stay pretty active, so I believe that had a large part of my conditioning start. Anyways, the soreness period is slowly leaving (Thank God) and I should be back to running at regular conditioning pace without any soreness. It will be just in time for our official season start on Oct. 25 (2 days after my birthday*). I am ready for this season and have a lot of people pulling on me to stay strong and "keep moving towards my goals". I can tell you from what little experience that I have, that your support team can really get you through some tough times, so I want to personally thank all of you all who have been there for me and will continue to push me toward greatness.

As far as conditioning I would say Im about where I need to be for now and that the next week and a half will get me into the shape I need to be in for practice with Coach Mitchell. This will be my sophomore year in the Pro life, but I feel like it is a rookie year all over again. I had so much confusion and anxiety last year that I didn't know what to expect. Now that I have been through a season and understand what is expected of me and what I should expect, I will be able to have better practices and ultimately better performances. As the season roars to an exciting start I am ready to take the reigns of this opportunity and carpe diem (Latin. seize the day). The life of...a warrior

Magic!

Hey hey bloggers whats up!! So the off season continues to bring all sorts of fun, and Im LOVING IT! What have I been up to that has me so excited? Im glad you asked :) This past weekend I had the privilege to secure tickets to the event "enter Legend". this was the theme of the newly built Amway Center where the Orlando magic NBA Team play. I had heard so much about it from the state of the art technology to the comfy seats to the exquisite restaurants on site. With all the hype I couldn't help but be excited. they said they did a great job and boy did the city SHOW OUT for their Magic basketball team! The stadium is 2.5 times bigger tan the old Amway Arena and has more than 3 times the bathrooms available. (I guess that was a major issue at the lat arena). It has the largest center court screen in the country (which is comparable to the Dallas Cowboys screen, in relation to the stadium of course, in Texas). It has 2 restaurants that I saw, 2 lounges to hang out at, 2 open area bar and food locations on the upper levels, and a pretty happening kids zone too. Thats not the only thing though...their practice court is connected to the stadium as a wing that connects right to the back of their locker room. News channels had been interviewing the players prior to the grand opening and they seemed REALLY authentically hype about it.

When you walk into the Amway Center you are welcomed by a gigantic lobby area with 50 foot posters of the several star players on the team. The lobby itself is 80 feet tall and fans must take escalators to the first level. I believe I remember hearing that it has 5 levels in and of itself for seating and entertainment, and every seat has a great view of the court. Even the nosebleed$5 seats that they offer for magic games have a really good view in my opinion. Needless to say the Orlando Magic has a new home and they aren't looking back for one second, except to say "I never would have imagined something this great"! they are enjoying every moment of it and I did too. Im hoping to snatch up a couple home game tickets and check out the live action in the new Center for myself. Even if they're against crappy teams sports venues are fun to attend and can leave you with great experiences. I suggest that everyone who is able to check out the arena at one point or another. Because after all, who knows who you might meet?

Update

Hey bloggers, whats crackin! I know I've missed out on my June posts for the most part, but BOY have I been on a grind! From work to play and trying to find time for myself to do some much anticipated studying (I like to learn!). Anyways, this is how June ended up goin down:

I've had two track meets this month, both put on by my great coach: D. Mitchell. Even if I havent seen such a huge improvement in times this year (just getting back to my PR) I've already progressed so much under him. Im actually learning how to run and more importantly how to think on the track. My first race was the 5th and it went pretty well. I blasted outta the blocks and ripped down the back stretch. Unfortunately my body has lately been deciding that @ 200m I start thinking and mess my steps up. I actually end up finishing the last 100m accompanied by my final two barriers fairly well; usually closing on people. I don't know what it is about that second curve but it just looks like I'm not going to make any of those hurdles over there so I start to force my stride open and it slows me down. One of my boys Adretti said I need to trust my steps and keep trying to gun for it. I'll definitely try something like that next race. Needless to say I didn't win the race but I came in 3rd overall.

The second meet on the 12th was MOS (More of the Same) as my old finance instructor used to say, he thought that was soo funny...I don't know. Ok Im back from my tangent. I was actually really tired going into this meet. It was WAY hotter than the the week before and we were experiencing a record heat index that whole week. I prepared for the meet well eating sleeping, drinking water, and taking care of my body but I was just drained when I stepped on the track. I did do more hurdle drills prior to race start, so perhaps. Anyway, I felt like I got out pretty slow...got rolled on at the backstretch (way too early to see any competitors from your inside lanes). I didn't feel like I was pushing it much first half of the race, but I came on a little bit towards the end (typical). Not enough to get the win though.

Aside from running I've been trying to figure out what exactly can you do in Orlando besides Theme Parks. I mean Im down for a good thrill ride any day of the week, but when it costs $89 for a one-day pass, I'd rather watch the birds fly around in the sky. Plenty enough excitement for me; at least for the first 5 or 6 minutes.

I've been trying to take care of my car, but some small things pop up now and then. How many people get their oil changed every 3k miles? Alright now newer cars have an oil gauge that tells your oil life? if you are only @ 60% every 3k miles would you think you really NEED to get another change so soon, or does the guage mean little to nothing as far as oil maintenance?

As for all the excitement in my voice its because Im headed back home in about 2 weeks! Im mainly there for business (track meet) but I can always relax, stress free around family. If you can't tell Im pretty excited about it. With a stress free enviornment better times are always produced and its easier to focus, so Im looking forward to a comfortable and fast race.

In other news, BIG shoutout to my long-time good good friend Philip Roscoe who just signed his first professional baseball contract to play in Canada. He's definitely doing his thing and Im looking to see some great stats among other things (major's possibly...hmmm?!) lol. Once again Congratulations Man, you are living your dream! As for me Im outta here bloggers so see you later Sayonara e Konbanwa! This is...the life of D Kinney

Good Things

One of the main reasons I haven't been on the computer is just that I don't have as much time (ie. Im not forcing myself to stay up wee hours in the night for all the facebook updates and wall posts...yea fb is a problem). Instead I've determined to at least try to start heading in a better direction and allow my body to get the rest and nutrients it needs.

Of late I've been reading and researching about eating healthy and several other vital elements our body needs to function at optimal efficiency. The book is by Dr. Don Colbert titled, The Seven Pillars of Health. In it he describes seven main areas where almost every person (especially americans) can improve on for their body to "get back to creation" essentially. As you know our bodies are very complex and intricately designed not only to sustain our active lifestyles, but to ward off diseases and toxins we encounter on a daily basis too. Some of the pillars include the importance of water, sleep and rest, eating living foods, and coping/eliminating stress. I am learning a whole lot from the book and I feel that the small changes Im implementing are already showing results in my practices and my job.

Speaking of practice it has been going much better and it is safe to say I've gotten into a comfortable rythm to where my hurdle days are not so scary. I used to get mini anxiety attacks going into hurdle practice for fear of messing up, not doing exactly what coach wanted, or being mentally fatigued, all of which ended up wearing on me and came to pass for the most part. The past 2.5 weeks have been much better and I've been more relaxed, faster, and more confident.

Some things that helped me out, which I would recommend you do if you have any similar life issues, is to have someone to discuss what you feel is going on. Try identifying what is causing any mental or physical blocks, and when you discover them do what is necessary to erradicate them. Next I read the Bible (you may be surprised how comforting it is to your issues). I am a Christian, and have grown up in church all my life, but the Bible isn't just for "religion". It literally has advice and substantial wisdom in MANY areas of any persons regular lifestyle. I try take a little time out every day to read The Word, but I have really been activating it with my faith, and in so doing have seen amazing results. I challenge you to try the Word in truth and sincerity and see if it doesn't help comfort and lead you to a better life. There is one last thing I've chose to do in efforts to eliminate the stresses of life, bills, and worry. I've kept my mind off worry and instead have done things I like such as listened to music, reading books, or (my favorite) watching a good movie, usually comedy, that takes my mind off my cares. After these things I always feel much better. If you have worries, bills, and problems that are disturbing you it doesn't help to pout about them. If you clear your mind and relax your body you will be in a better mental position where you can think clearly and solve your problems.

In addition to these changes I've been trying to implement a better nutrition intake for myself and get the necessary 7-9 hours of sleep each day. On days that I know I'll be working my evening job, and possibly miss out on my full nights sleep, I try to get in a nap after practice. This way my body will allow itself to jumpstart the recovery thing for a little while so it can pick up later that night. Drop a comment to say what helps you get over stress. The life of...DKtG

Sports Performance, Part II

Ok, lets just jump right in. Some things to help you train better during workouts are protein solids or shake if you like, good breakfast (usually whatever your stomach/body can handle), water (a little that morning or if you practice later in the day drinking a good amount of water throughout the day.

The rule for drinking water is that the water you drink today is for helping you tomorrow. Water will help hydrate your body the day you are drinking it, but you will need to replenish most of it when you wake up in the morning. Our bodies are on recovery and repair mode when we sleep; the body is using the least amount of energy, the metabolism slows down, and the nutrients, water and vitamins that you are digesting goes throughout your body to repair your muscles, tissues and bones. You can think of your body as a business that closes when you go to sleep and your body sends its "overnight cleaning crew" to repair and nourish itself so that you will be ready for your day in the morning.

Most people don't like to eat a whole breakfast prior to a workout so a protein bar or shake will suffice for those who work out in the morning. If you work out later in the day it would be wise to have a nice sized breakfast to help keep your body going until the work out. Most of the bars and shakes available supply your body with a decent amount of protein to help your muscles recover during a workout a little faster. They may also include other substances like vitamins, natural herbs, or bcaa's (Branched chain amino acids). These are those amino acids that help your body during intense physical activity and include some non-essential and essential aminos. A shake is going to be a powder base to be mixed with either water or juice. This will get into your system faster than a bar will, since it will not have to digest as much and will benefit your body if you need energy quickly. A bar would be considered a slow release energy booster/enhancer because your body has to digest the material and then get it into your bloodstream which takes longer than liquids.

During practice it is best to drink a sports drink, sports gel, or other electrolyte supplement packs so that the body doesn't lose too much of its fuel to where the body starts to break down. You can vascilate with your sports drink and water, but the key is to stay hydrated so you won't cramp. To get the max edge some people drink sports shakes that replenish more than just electrolytes, but supplies you with aminos and protein so the body breaks down slower giving the person seemingly more endurance and power. I would recommend some, but I don't want to take away from their advertising.

If you are a persons that usually gets cramps pretty easy you probably want to eat a banana and drink a glass of salt water or have something with a decent amount of sodium in it prior to workouts. Gatorade and other sports drinks will help reduce cramp incidents also because it replenishes those electrolytes. A cramp is simply when you body does not have enough of those electric impulses in your nervous system to allow your muscles to function and as a result causes a painful involuntary contraction that can last for several minutes. Sodium (Na) is an element used in the body to charge the bodys muscles and nerves. It helps the signals from the brain to the nerves work by creating electric impulses that communicate to the muscles when to lift, push, or move. Potassium (K) is an element that is used in the body to convert sugar into glycogen which, when depleted cause your body to feel the lactate building up during intense runs. K and Na are both two of the electrolytes and is excreted from the body through sweat and as you can see need to be replenished.

After practice it is good to get in an ice tub when your muscles are sore. When they are heavy and tight I would suggest a hot bath. Also some things that will help your body recover are choco milk, protein shakes, after workout supplements like glutamine, apples, other fresh fruit. Of course you also want to continue to drink water to prep for your next day.

Occasional check-ups with a massage and physical therapist, trainer, or chiropractor will also help keep your body in tip top shape to continue intense training. These specialists help to relieve tension in muscles, keep them limber, and to verify that all muscles are working properly and in line together. A lot of times an people may have injury problems because their body is out of line which can cause stress on other areas of the body, eventually affect the muscle mobility and performance. Some people are against chiro because they do so much with rearranging you bones and they feel there are more natural ways to get the same things done. Im indifferent thus far...being that I've never gotten massages or visited chiro prior to this rookie year of mine as a professional.

Sports Research: Part II

The fact is that many athletes want to know about sports nutrition, but don’t know where to start. There are myths and facts floating around in every high school, college locker room (men & women), and professional team about what foods, vitamins, and supplements are good for athletes. Of course, an athlete’s optimal vitamin intake and choice of the like tend to vary for each sport. I have been researching information regarding supplements in professional sports for myself and also to share with interested readers like yourself. Like I stated in an earlier post this month, I would prefer to get all my essential vitamins, acids, proteins, etc from natural methods such as food intake. Although, through my research of late, I’m finding out more and more that it would take a serious overload on food in order to acquire all of the necessary elements and essentials for optimal performance naturally versus taking supplements. If an athlete should choose to take supplements, they should be used IN CONJUNCTION with a healthy diet. One without the other will not create the optimal intake of those proteins, vitamins, and essential nutrients the body needs to repair, maintain, and build those strong muscles required for competition. Remember that a supplement is to be used in addition, as extra, or as an appendage to your regular daily diet.

The few questions that constantly vacillate mind of athletes are, How do I gain more muscle?, How can I improve recovery?, and How can I increase my power and strength?. I can help answer a few of these now. Your muscles are made up of protein. Protein is made of polypeptides, which are various strands of amino acids combined in different arrays to create different amino acids. There are 20 amino acids and the human body can only produce 11 of them (non-essential amino acids). The remainder (essential amino acids) is acquired through the consumption of food. The best foods with the most amino acids are veal, lamb, red meat, fish, eggs, and milk.

How Can I gain more muscle? – For an increase in muscle one must create the correct mix of all 20 amino acids to support growth in the muscle areas. This isn’t to say drink an overdose of protein shakes and eat protein bars every day; your body can only use so much protein throughout your daily activities before it starts to store it. You don’t want your body to store protein because it does so in the process of metabolizing (converting) it to fat which is opposite an athlete’s desire. Protein intake must also be accompanied with exercise and weight training in order to fully see the benefits of increased muscle mass. Failure to exercise or weight train will also result in the storing of protein (i.e. Fat).

According to MSNBC you can use the following formula to calculate the amount of protein an average person should consume (in grams): (weight ÷ 2) – 10 = protein consumption in grams. However, if you are an athlete or a person involved with high intensity activities fitness.com suggests that you use this formula: weight *0.6. For body builders and those looking to seriously increase in muscle mass multiply weight by 0.8. People that do more obviously will need more energy throughout their day than the average person.

How can I improve recovery? – Muscle recovery and post-exercise soreness can be optimized with the consumption of a protein packed drink or snacks after workouts, but unfortunately any over consumption of protein will not increase these benefits. Protein is an essential nutrient that helps build and repair muscle tissue, provide structure (nails), and transport oxygen and electrons to name a few. Eating and drinking things with protein in them after a hard practice can help your muscles recover, but will not completely eradicate soreness or fatigue after the fact. Other nutrients and supplements, discussed in the next session of sports research, will help inhibit recovery further.

According to Ian Rollo and Clyde Williams consuming a carbohydrate-electrolyte (CHO-E) drink, such as Gatorade, 30 minutes prior and 15 minutes between intervals will definitely increase performance during a workout. Many scientists and nutritionists alike say that another great post-practice recovery drink is chocolate milk. McNamara of CBS News notes in her article that during the 2004 Summer Olympics superstar swimmer Michael Phelps was known for drinking chocolate milk between races. A known Kenesiologist, Jason Karp of Indiana University, found that milk has protein, potassium, vitamin D, and calcium that will naturally supply the body with the means to repair muscle and also maintain strong bones. Chocolate contains a large amount of antioxidants which is beneficial for blood causing a reduced capability of clotting. Chocolate milk was proven in his study to have just as much carbohydrates and protein as the leading endurance formula recovery drink, Endurox r4, at less than 50% of the cost. So those who want to increase their endurance and decrease their muscle fatigue before and during a workout should drink a CHO-E drink accordingly. For those who are a bit more financially bound, but still interested in muscle recovery, you would do well with having a light pre-workout snack, such as a bagel, and thermos of chocolate milk during and after a workout.

Happy Holidays

A lot of my friends have been asking what are my plans for the holidays, and if Im coming back home (Michigan). As much as I would love to see my brothers, my mom and dad, the rest of my family (Im a big family guy), and all my friends I won't be returning for the holidays this year. Its my first year being away from home, family and the ever so sought after "Winter Wonderland" during Christmas. Instead, I'll be enjoying the sun here in Orlando while working and training.

While my people back home open gifts and spend time with each other I'll be here grinding it out for the pursuit of happiness. Maybe its because Im not heading home, but it doesn't even feel like Christmas down here. Perhaps my Christmas spirit is cluttered from the nostalgic white Christmas evenings lit with the glow of nearly every house's Christmas lights. Here it has been as hot as 82 degrees just recently, each neighborhood is only sprinkled with a few holiday light displays around their houses, and people don't seem to be moved one way or the other. To be honest, I thought it was absolutely hilarious when I saw a palm tree with lights on it. It just looks weird!

Thankfully Christmas isn't about all of the feelings but the greatest gift of all: Jesus. He was born so we could have the option to be set free from sin, sickness, and strife. Im so greatfull for God and the relationships Im building with him each day. Aside from family, presents, and hot cocoa be thankful for the real reason for the season. Hopefully I can find the Christmas spirit between now and next week, but until then I will be working hard, loving others, and thanking God for His Son Jesus!

Sports Research

As a rookie professional I naturally have a LOT of questions and am very very curious about everything involved. I need to know things that will help me make informed decisions on things like agents, vitamins/supplements, meets, sponsors, etc. Since I was not a great stand-out athlete in college, rather an underdog athlete with limited resources, I have to acquire most of this information for myself. As much as I welcome it, people don't go around telling you all the in's and outs of the sport. I have however, been asking some of my teammates who are sponsored and my coach for information on the rather immense list.

Of late I have been researching topic of vitamins and supplements. Im always disappointed when I hear of athletes (especially T&F) doping and continually drawing negative attention to the sport. I really don't like the idea of having to take something for my body to perform at maximum capacity during workouts or competition. I would much more prefer to get all of my vitamins through my regular food intake. That way I would feel more accomplished with no question as to whether the powered mix helped me out or was it my body's natural strength and stamina.

Some people may argue that most of the vitamins and supplements are natural, they're just extracted from whatever meats, fruits, or vegetables they are found in. My response for that is that "God put everything he wanted in everything he wanted (Dr. Mike; Spirit of Faith). Extracting these vitamins is not natural, therefore I would rather acquire mine from food intake. However, I am interested to know and understand this issue so if there is no better way of gathering the necessary microbes, enzymes, and the like then I may be willing to take supplements.
Im just in the very early stages of research on this topic so I will keep everyone posted on any relevant or helpful findings. FEEL FREE TO COMMENT :)

My New Spot

Wednesday marked an especially important day in my life (in the real world). As you know I have been staying with my cousin near Daytona Beach. Since I arrived here about a month ago I have constantly been on the hunt for jobs and places to live. Im excited to say that I finally have an amazing spot right near my training facility! It isn't my own apartment, but I will be renting a room out of a house on the West side of Orlando. I signed the lease, secured the deposit, and got my own keys to the spot. I can't wait to have my friends and family come visit especially my brothers David and Derek. Hopefully they will get to come down during their Christmas break, but we'll see how things unfold. Im headed to finish moving in and arranging everything now. My first lease and initial entry into the bill-paying life. Ahh well, I had to get ready for it sometime, right? I wish there was a scholarship for LIFE, lol.

Getting my feet wet

Starting out down the professional athlete road seems pretty tough from what I've already experienced and from stories that others have told. I have been getting up early every morning to start a list of things to do. Then I get in the Word and read a little and try to devote some time to pray also. After that I end up going for a 20-30 minute run to get my conditioning up before practice actually starts in October. This is something I definitely have to get used to: the blistering Florida sunshine. Around here it usually gets pretty hot right around 10am so I try to start my run before 9:30. This way I won't come back a total sweat towel. I do the runs every other day just to give my legs some recovery time. In between I do my strength days that include about 1,000 crunches and 100 push-ups, which isn't much now. Im just trying to shock the muscles since it has been too long since I have actually worked out. I have to ease back into this thing. I will probably start to increase my intensity as the month goes on so I can keep the muscles in shock and create muscle going into practice.

Since I moved with my family in New Smyrna I've been on the constant run. I have been commuting back and forth to Orlando looking for jobs, going to meetings with my coach or teammates, and trying to get more familiar with the areas. My major task thus far is to get a job. I would prefer one in my field of study (International Business and Finance) but I really just need something to pay the bills. So today I'm heading back to Orlando to put in a few more aps and meet another one of my teammates, Rudy, I believe.

Although I've had some pretty busy days I did find time to relax a little bit yesterday. After I woke up and took my car to the dealer to be serviced I decided to lounge around the house. I ended up going over my aunt Nay's house who lives down the street and chatted it up with her for a while. Now this is my grandmother's sister so she is full of wisdom; I figured I would try to get her to tell me a few history lessons from the family to see if I could grab hold of some of that wisdom. She had a lot going through her head and kept me listening, but in the end didn't say too much. I figured she was pretty tired, so I told her we would talk again sometime as she left to take a nap.

After talking with Aunt Nay I figured I would take a ride down to the beach and get my feet wet. Now we had something like beaches in Michigan, but to see the Atlantic ocean in a tropical enviornment was amazing! The clouds were parted in one section where the sun was shining bright, but the rest of the sky was filled with different sizes and shapes of clouds. I looked far out into the horizon and noticed a boat in the distance, probably a fishing boat. Then I looked down the coast and saw a few people trying to take hold of the waves with their surf boards while they eagerly waited for the perfect one. I just paused to take in the beautiful site. I wish I had a camera to show everyone, but thats another thing Im working on. Since there was no camera I felt the need to tell someone. So I texted one of the coolest and most beautiful young ladies I know from Howard University. I assured her she would love this place. Hopefully she'll come visit sometime!! I stayed awhile then decided I better take it back home and prepare for tomorrow: the job hunt continues
